does anybody know what the best calculator is for calculus 10b?
i've been working with a TI-84 for calc, but I have to buy a new one anyway, so I was wondering if a TI-89 is a good investment.
thanks for any help.

orientation in less than 2 weeks!!

You don't need a TI-89 for Calc 10b -- what you've got now is fine.

Since you need to get a new one, I'd probably get an 89; the symbolic manipulation helps in higher level courses. It's not that much more expensive, and you can keep it for several years (I've had my 89 for over 5 years now, and it still works perfectly except for the link port, which is unimportant to the actual calculator aspect of it). Unless, of course, your 84 still works perfectly, in which case you should keep it, but you said you needed a new one.

For calc 10b? They disallow calculators on tests and such (iirc), and technically you don't even need a calculators.

it can only help with homework and so forth.

the 89 is really nice. just make sure you don't get too dependent on your calculator since you can't use them for tests.

No calculator! Can't use it on tests or quizzes! Don't get used to having one!!

(I've had a TI-83+ throughout 3 years of science classes at Brandeis, it's been more than enough.)

IIRC the calculus classes (10a and b) don't allow the use of calculators on tests or quizzes. I can understand why they don't allow graphing and programmable calculators, but why they don't allow scientific calculators I'll never know.

The science courses I took allowed scientific calculators but not grpahing calculators. I wouldn't recommend spending any more money on a fancier graphing calculator.

i haven't taken calc at brandeis yet, but there are some really great features on an 89 that an 83+ just doesn't have (the sovle function) but it's a really good idea not to use one too much b/c you'll become dependant and it's good to learn how to do everythign withotu the calc, but if you want one go for the 89.
